Around the site

This season we are opening up a new area as part of our aim to excavate a complete strip along the northern cliff edge.

Extending right up to the edge of the cliff the trench will expose as much of the archaeology as possible. The site is owned by Shepway District Council, who have kindly agreed to allow continued fieldwork.

  • On our site we will have a hut for storing our tools and finds, and for sheltering in if the weather turns nasty.

  • Our site is a no smoking site - smoking is permitted outside of the fencing but not within the compound.

  • Toilet facilities are located a short walk away in a public toilet (so no dealing with Portaloos!).

  • We do not offer accommodation at this time but can give you a list of local campsites and B&Bs

  • Tools will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. Trowels will be available to purchase.

  • Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water.

  • Our site is on an exposed cliff top with little shade. You will experience extremes of weather up there so be prepared!

  • You will need to wear sturdy footwear - please no open toed sandals. Trainers are fine but may get muddy!

  • Please make sure your tetanus injection is up-to-date and that you have any necessary medication with you. We will have first aid kits on site.

  • Canterbury Archaeological Trust holds public liability insurance and employer’s liability insurance specifically tailored for undertaking archaeological fieldwork. As either a student or volunteer taking part in the field school you will be covered by these policies.
