The Field School is being led by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in conjunction with Kent Archaeological Society, Folkestone Research and Archaeology Group, Folkestone People's History Centre, and Dover Archaeological Group.
We have set this field school up to provide training to anyone interested in archaeology; you do not have to be a student or have any archaeological experience to get involved. Our site is staffed by professional archaeologists from Canterbury Archaeological Trust with support from long term volunteers from local archaeology groups. Our training is the same we would give any member of staff on a commercial site and we use the BAJR 'Archaeology Skills Passport' to evidence your progress.
Ultimately we aim to collate the results of the previous fieldwork carried out at East Wear Bay with the results of the current ongoing field school to produce one or more publications fully detailing this important site.
We are ready to start at 9am on site and we usually finish at 5pm Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off.
We have 30 minutes for morning break, 45 minutes for lunch, and another short break in the afternoon.
We are fortunate at East Wear Bay to be working on a finds rich site, so much so that we have a dedicated team of finds processors on site working their way through the material we excavate.
The site will be led by Andy Macintosh, Annie Partridge and Andrew Richardson from Canterbury Archaeological Trust, with support from Folkestone Research and Archaeology Group (FRAG) and Dover Archaeological Group (DAG).
Our training programme will cover all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, from excavation to recording, finds processing, and surveying. We expect everyone who signs up for the training course to have a go at all of these activities, however, the programme is flexible so you can tailor your experience to suit your needs. We aim to give you as wide an experience as we possibly can so you may get the most out of your training with us.
We use the BAJR Skills Passport as a basis for assessment and if you do not already have one of these you will be given one on site as a record of your training with us.
You do not need any previous experience and we welcome everyone of all ages to the site (but do ask that anyone under 16 be accompanied by an adult).
